I was diametrically opposed to the U.S. invasion of Iraq on what I believed to be completely inadequate information (our executive branch simply refused to provide any justifying evidence, saying only, in effect, that everyone should just "trust us") and also because I felt very strongly that this kind of invasion was not only a violation of international laws and agreements, but that it would set a precedent greatly reducing the "bar" to going to war. Allowing one individual or executive administration to decide to go to war over nothing more than a claimed perception of the potential for a threat, let alone when there was at the time no objective evidence of any kind to support that argument (nor later, of course), means that any country may justify any belligerence on the same basis and there will be no barriers at all. War becomes trivial to justify for anyone and this is simply unacceptable as a standard, in this day. (I've written on this topic in the newgroups, so it's relatively easy to find my posts on this subject.) On February 15th, 2003, there were a number of demonstrations around the world showing opposition to what appeared to be U.S. President Bush's pell-mell run towards war in Iraq. I list here a few of those pictures and articles I copied on that day: I also kept a few copies of news reports on that day from the BBC. They are here. I've also included links to the current version of those web sites, as well. My copy is on the left and a web link is on the right. I can't guarantee that the web links will work and I already know that several won't. Regardless, I'm including them here because that is the link I used to capture the PDF versions.
